NYPD Defies Mayor’s Sanctuary City Policy

Ever since Rudy Giuliani left the Mayor’s office at the end of 2001, New York City has been run by ultra-liberals. The infamous gun-hating and anti-Second Amendment Michael Bloomberg was mayor for the next 11 years. He once claimed to be a Democrat, then switched to Republican and in 2007 listed himself as an Independent. However, Bloomberg was as ultra-left and liberal as the majority of Democrats and still is.

On January 1, 2014, Bill de Blasio was sworn in as New York’s mayor. As a true Democrat, de Blasio is further left-wing than the Social Democratic Party of Iran. As soon as he became mayor, he handcuffed the New York Police Department by ending stop and frisk.

In December 2014, a number of New York City Policemen/women signed letters requesting that Mayor de Blasio not attend their funeral if they got killed in the line of duty. The form letter stated:

Don’t Insult My Sacrifice

I, __________________, as a New York City Police officer, request that Mayor Mill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito refrain from attending my funeral services in the event that I am killed in the line of duty. Due to Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Mark-Viverito’s consistent refusal to show police officers the support and respect they deserve, I believe that their attendance at the funeral of a fallen New York City police officer is an insult to the officer’s memory and sacrifice.

This was prompted by the way de Blasio vilified the NYPD following the death of Eric Garner while in the custody of half a dozen NYPD officers. de Blasio demonstrated his disdain for the police when he said that he has been training his bi-racial son to be polite and respectful to police because he does not want the cops to shoot and kill his son. He never said anything about teaching his bi-racial son to respect the law and obey the law, just to be careful not to get shot and killed by the NYPD.

Not long after NYPD sent their signed form letters to de Blasio’s office, he further created a divide between him and the NYPD by re-appointing Laura Johnson to the Brooklyn Criminal Court. She had made enemies of many on the NYPD for releasing the two men who murdered NYPD Officers Ramos and Liu. She not only released the men, but required no bail be set for them.

Knowing the rift that exists between de Blasio and the NYPD, it was no surprise to me when I learned that the NYPD are defying de Blasio’s sanctuary city policy. According to Fox News:

“The NYPD reportedly alerts federal immigration officials to illegal immigrants’ appearances in criminal court despite Mayor Bill de Blasio’s vow to remain a sanctuary city.”

“The NYPD’s process of verifying warrants against a defendant includes contacting relevant law enforcement agencies, including ICE, which alerts agents to an illegal immigrant’s upcoming court date, the New York Daily News reported Sunday.”

“New York City has vowed to only alert immigration officials if an illegal immigrant is accused of a violent crime.”

This all came to a head when ICE officials showed up to a take Milton Chimborazo and David Gonzalez into custody. Gonzalez had been deported once before and was facing misdemeanor charges for improper behavior with a woman on the subway. Chimborazo already had an outstanding deportation order and had been arrested for burglary. That’s when it was divulged that the NYPD is informing ICE when they check the immigration status for anyone they arrest or detain.

This has to be causing Mayor de Blasio to blow his gasket, but that’s what he gets for defying federal law and treating the NYPD the way he has. In fact, it would make many people in New York City and elsewhere, very happy if de Blasio was arrested and jailed for his stance on New York being a sanctuary city, thus defying the law. Technically, this makes him an accessory to the violation of federal immigration laws for every illegal harbored in the city.
